डेस्कटॉप और लैपटॉप के लिए कुछ महत्वपूर्ण ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम निम्न प्रकार है।
लिनक्स ( Linux )
यह एक ओपन सोर्स ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम है तथा सभी प्रकार के कम्प्यूटर पर कार्य कर सकता है। यह Unix पर आधारित एक ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम है। इसकी शुरुआत लाइनस तोरवाइल्डस ने हेलसिंकी विश्वविद्यालय से की थी व इसका पहला सस्करण 0.11 वर्ष 1991 में रीलीज हुआ। Red Hat , Ubuntu and Chromium आदि लिनक्स आधारित ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम है।
उनिक्स (Unix)
यह एक मल्टी टास्किंग व मल्टी यूजर ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम है , जिसे वर्ष 1969 में केन थॉमसन और डेनिस रिची द्वारा विकसित किया गया था। इसे प्रारम्भ में UNICS के नाम से जाना जाता था , जिसका पूरा नाम ( Uniplexed Information Computing System ) है। इस ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम को सर्वर तथा वर्कस्टेशन दोनों में प्रयोग किया जा सकता है। इसमें डाटा मैनेजमेंट का कार्य कर्नल द्वारा होता है। इस ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम को इनस्टॉल व सेटअप करना कठिन होता है , किन्तु इस ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम के इनस्टॉल होने पर कम्प्यूटर की छमता बहुत बढ़ जाती है।
एमएस - डॉस ( MS - DOS )
यह एक ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम है , जो वर्ष 1981 में IBM कारपोरेशन द्वारा विकसित किया गया है। यह Personal Computer पर रन होता है। डॉस एक सिंगल यूजर ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम है, जो माइक्रोसॉफ्ट द्वारा विकसित है।
एप्पल मैकिंटोश मैक OS
यह एक ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम है, जिसे 24 मार्च , 2001 में एप्पल इंक द्वारा प्रस्तावित किया गया था और इसे शुरुआत में सिस्टम सॉफ्टवेयर के नाम से जाना जाता था , जिसे बाद में मैक OS के रूप में परिवर्तित कर दिया गया था।
एमएस - विंडोज ( MS - Windows )
यह माइक्रोसॉफ्ट द्वारा विकसित ग्राफ़िक यूजर इंटरफ़ेस ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम है। इसके विभिन्न संस्करण ; जैसे - विंडोज -95 / 98 / XP / Vista आदि उपलब्ध है। यह एक यूजर फ्रेंडली ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम है तथा इसमें कार्य करना अत्यंत सरल है।
