Functions of Operating System
ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम कम्प्यूटर के सफल संचालन की प्रक्रिया में एक महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाता है।
इसके प्रमुख कार्य निम्न है।
1. प्रोसेसिंग प्रबंधन ( Processing Management )
यह कम्प्यूटर के CPU के प्रबंधन का कार्य करता है। यह प्रबंधन इस प्रकार होता है की सभी प्रोग्राम एक - एक करके निष्पादित ( Execute ) होते है। ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम सभी प्रोग्रामों के समय को CPU के लिए विभाजित कर देता है।
2. मेमोरी मैनेजमेंट ( Memory Management )
प्रोग्राम के सफल कार्यान्वयन के लिए ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम मेमोरी प्रबंधन का अत्यंत ही महत्वपूर्ण कार्य करता है। इसके अंतर्गत कम्प्यूटर मेमोरी में कुछ स्थान सुरछित रखे जाते है , जिनका विभाजन प्रोग्रामो के मध्य किया जाता है तथा साथ ही यह भी ध्यान में रखा जाता है की प्रोग्रामों को मेमोरी के अलग - अलग स्थान प्राप्त हो संके। किसी भी प्रोग्राम को इनपुट एंव आउटपुट करते समय आंकड़ों एवं सूचनाओं को अपने निर्धारित स्थान में संगृहीत करने का कार्य भी ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम का ही है।
3. फाइल प्रबंधन ( File Management )
ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम फाइलों को एक साथ सुव्यवस्थित ढंग से किसी डायरेक्टरी में संगृहीत करने की सुविधा प्रदान करता है। किसी प्रोग्राम के निष्पाद के समय इसे सेकंडरी मेमोरी से पढ़कर प्राइमरी मेमोरी में स्थान्तरित करने के कार्य भी ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम ही करता है।
4. इनपुट - आउटपुट प्रबंधन ( Input / Output Management )
डाटा को इनपुट यूनिट से पढ़कर मेमोरी में उचित स्थान पर डाटा को इनपुट यूनिट से पढ़कर मेमोरी में उचित स्थान पर संगृहीत करने एवं प्राप्त परिणाम को मेमोरी से आउटपुट यूनिट तक पहुँचने का कार्य भी ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम का ही होता है। इसके लिए बायोस ( BIOS , Basic Input Output System ) प्रयोग किया जाता है।

3. File Management
The operating system provides the facility to store files together in a systematic manner in a directory. At the time of execution of a program, the operating system also performs the task of reading it from the secondary memory and transferring it to the primary memory.
4. Input - Output Management
Reading the data from the input unit at the appropriate place in the memory, reading the data from the input unit and storing it at the appropriate place in the memory and accessing the result obtained from the memory to the output unit is also the task of the operating system itself.
